What the hell's a meet-cute?

What is it about traveling the world that makes you curious? You would think it to be the opposite, in that since you have seen more and have more answers you are now less curious. Wrong. After my trip with Semester at Sea to 10 countries I have felt as though the world is shrinking. The more I travel, the more I see that we are not so different, but more the same. We all want the same things for our family.
To quote Leona Lewis, “I just wanna be happy”.
In the movie The Holiday, Kate Winslet’s character has a “meet-cute”. What is a meet-cute you might ask? Well, it is a sort of run in with a stranger that turns out to be a very pleasant coincidence of time and event. An easy example is when the owner’s of Pongo and Perty in 101 Dalmatians meet in the park in London walking their Dalmatians. Of course, they end up falling in love and marrying but that is beside the point.
…I mean it could happen.
When I traveled, I liked these little meet-cutes and now that I’m back in Pittsburgh, I’d like to keep it up. I have made a vow with one of my roommates, HK, to do so. Pittsburghers are the most interesting collection of people I have ever come across. The eclectic-ness of this city draws yinzer-sportsnuts and art connoisseurs in equal amounts. We take hippies from California and wannabe-organic suburb-escapees. We thrive on sleek runners and aging beer bellies.
This city has a lot to offer and I am going to find it.
Here is my horoscope for the day:
“The poet Stephen Mallarme wrote the following in a letter to a friend: “I don’t know which of my internal climates I should explore in order to find you and meet you.” I love that passage. It alludes to the central facts about the nature of reality: The quality of your consciousness is crucial in determining whether you’ll be able to attract the resources that are essential to your dreams coming true. In order to get what you want, you have to work on yourself at least as much as you work on the world around you. This is always true of course, but it is especially true for you now, Aries.”
Another thing, I have started this blog because, while on the ship, a friend of mine had a blog (ACK) and she urged me to start one. I told her “Who wants to hear what I have to say? My life isn’t exciting.” But she told me, “You are going back to a big city and you have a real engineering job. That’s exciting. And by the way, you just traveled the world.” So if only ACK and my mom read this, that will be enough.
Stay tuned.
